Find out about GoodGym TaskForce

Share the love

Newham’s first starter session got underway at the weekend and saw 4 first time runners initiated into GoodGym. As well as the runners this was our first time teaming up with Urban Wilderness. A community garden and play area that brings the locals together promoting healthy living, sustainability and community spirit.

We gathered around the Aquatics Centre entrance sun beaming in and went through the plan for the morning. A light jog, some light gardening and a jog back. As we set off conversations amongst the team started, my advice to all ‘run at a pace you can hold a conversation at’
We left the park and made our way swiftly through Westfield foot traffic across the bridge and down the stairs to our safe shopper free route; quieter roads from here on. Half an hour later we were in Plaistow at the foot of Urban Wilderness, after being greeted by Jacquie and introduced to the site we grabbed our gloves and tools and got stuck in weeding away in the various beds. Jacquie was quick to point out one area of grass to avoid where a deceased bird was lying. Caught up in the flow of the task the bird managed to find the bottom of one of the Goodgymers feet within 5 minutes….whoops!

As we pruned, pulled and plucked away we were kindly offered some veg for our labour so a couple of the team walked away with a healthy handful of greens (perfect for a post run smoothie). 30mins went by and we found ourselves downing tools and taking the obligatory group pic before heading back to Stratford along the scenic greenway. Sun still shining and the team in good spirits we all made it back together.

Thank you everyone for your efforts, don’t be a stranger to GGNewham
